Domestic Smoke Alarm Requirements Current Law (England) Smoke alarms on every storey used for living accommodation Carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance Heat alarm in every kitchen All alarms must be connected (interlinked) Landlords must ensure alarms are in working order at start of tenancy BS 5839 6 Grades Grade D1 — mains powered with battery backup (minimum for new builds) Grade D2 — mains powered detectors, interlinked Grade F1 — battery powered with tamper proof 10 year battery Categories LD1 — detection throughout (all rooms including cupboards) LD2 — detection in specified rooms + escape routes LD3 — escape route detection only For domestic fire safety guidance, contact us.
